Our Story

Gross, Kelly & Co. Warehouse

The Barker family has been an integral part of the Santa Fe community for four generations. N.B. Laughlin arrived in Santa Fe from Texas on horseback in the 1880’s and served as Territorial Supreme Court judge in the early 1900s. His grandson, third-generation Santa Fean Laughlin Barker, founded Barker Realty more than 50 years ago. The City Different was still a small town then and the company was one of its few real estate brokerages. Laughlin’s reputation and friendships created many loyal clients.

Lisa & David Barker

Deep Roots

Laughlin’s son, David, is President and Qualifying Broker of Barker Realty. David joined his father in the business in 1978. Along with his wife, Lisa, the two have carried forward the family tradition and have moved the company into an exciting new era, while still nurturing the relationships that have been the company’s bedrock.

David has worked extensively in all areas of real estate brokerage, from higher-end residential sales to commercial sales, leasing and management. His style is hands-on and highly personal. He is past President of the Santa Fe Association of Realtors, was 1990’s Realtor of the Year, and has been a long-standing member of the Pro-Standards Committee. He was also a past board member of the Santa Fe Economic Development, was appointed by the mayor to chair the Santa Fe Convention Center Task Force, and has been a pivotal participant in the renewal of the historic Railyard.

David and Lisa recognize Santa Fe’s rich history distinguishes it from other American cities. They are deeply committed to the preservation of Santa Fe’s architectural traditions and landmarks but embrace new visions of its future.

Gross, Kelly & Co. Warehouse

Gross, Kelly & Co. Warehouse

The primary Barker Realty Office is located in the historic Gross Kelly Warehouse in the heart of the Santa Fe Railyard.

Gross Kelly and Almacen was vital in the history of the Southwest, expediting, transferring and exchanging goods manufactured in the eastern U.S. As an important center of commerce, it was the first commercial building in New Mexico that heralded the Spanish Pueblos architectural style.

As trendsetters, David and Lisa Barker worked with local architect Mark Hogan in 2001 to renovate and revitalize the warehouse, transforming it into a beautiful blend of modern and traditional architecture. It is widely acknowledged to be one of the most magnificent commercial spaces in Santa Fe and is a prominent anchor tenant of the Railyard district.
