The small towns of Madrid and Los Cerrillos harken back to the early days of mining and ranching. Found along the Turquoise Trail, both towns have deep Native American history tied to Turquoise mines, which then later revealed high concentrations of lead and coal and the development of today’s mining town of Madrid.
With the exhaustion of those natural resources, Madrid was reborn as an eclectic enclave of individuals who have transformed the town into a tourist destination providing galleries and cafes all year long. Famous for its biker bar, The Mineshaft, Madrid has been used in films depicting biker gangs and the Western landscape.
Cerrillos and surrounding hills were also once used for mining resources before being set aside as a State park for visitors to enjoy. The Cerrillos Hills State park offer short, yet scenic hiking trails with opportunities for both mountain bikers and horseback riding as well. Homes in these stunning landscapes typically involve acreage and space for livestock and outdoor pursuits.
